General Warning Signs of Suicide
- Previous suicide attempt and/or rehearsing suicide attempts
- Talking about suicide and/or preoccupation with death and dying
- Increased use of alcohol and other drugs
- Hopelessness
- Unexplained anger, aggression and irritability
- Withdrawal from friends and family; isolation
- Comments like “I won’t be a burden much longer” or “I can’t take this pain much longer”
- Giving away possessions
- Sudden cheerfulness after period of depression
- Lack of interest in things they used to enjoy
- Increased sadness, anxiety, irritability, boredom, restlessness, suspicion, and/or agitation
- Abrupt decline in grades or obsessive worry about job performance
