For Suicide Survivors

For Suicide Survivors

Each year, more than 32,000 people in the United States die by suicide, making it the 11th leading cause of death. They leave behind millions of family members and friends, called survivors, who try to cope with this tragic loss.

Information and resources for suicide survivors are available through many nonprofit organizations. They include:

  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) – A national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy.
  • For Suicide Survivors – Provides support for people coping with the shock and grief that accompany the loss of a loved one to suicide. It is also designed for survivors further along in their healing journey.
  • The Jed Foundation – Works nationally to reduce the rate of suicide and the prevalence of emotional distress among college and university students.
